Man was already practising mixed farming long before vines took over all the arable land, pastures, fallows and even hitherto uncultivated land in wine-producing villages. Many areas are still named after the crops that used to grow on the land in earlier days.
It is therefore quite probable that hemp (chanvre in French) used to be grown in this area, and that the name "Chenevottes" is a deformation over time of the word "chenevières", hemp fields.
Appellation: Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Chenevottes" 1ER Cru AOC
