The Route des Vins wends its way from the city of Dijon past
vineyards, charming villages, and celebrated grands crus on its way
south to Chassagne-Montrachet.
Some of the world’s top white wines, such as Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, whose praises have long been sung by poets and wine lovers alike, are produced here. These prestigious vineyards afford a fine view of the northern part of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. They overlook the small Saint Aubin valley, crossed by the Paris-Lyon road. Located lower down the valley, the village of Chassagne-Montrachet stretches from the foot of the slope to the edge of the woods. The houses of Chassagne-Montrachet are huddled together with the mountain to the West and watch the sun rise. Sometimes one can even see as far as the Jura and the Alps, including the magnificent outline of Mont Blanc. A large outcrop of bare rock on the slope shows traces of former marble quarries. In fact, this marble can be found worldwide and was used for paving the area surrounding the Louvre pyramid. With a choice of over 40 domaines, the fine wine lover is spoiled for choice in Chassagne-Montrachet. The town features a fine restaurant, Le Chassagne, as well as several charming guest houses. Starting off from the church, visitors can enjoy the beautiful flora and landscape on the "De Vignes en Bois" ("From vines to forest") walk. The Beaune-Santenay cycle route is another fantastic way to discover the region’s wine, culture and crafts. Consisting of outbuildings belonging to a former abbey and a few lone houses, the hamlet of Morgeot, south of Chassagne-Montrachet, is the centre of the area's largest named vineyard.
